When preparing artwork for digital printing, getting it right the first time can save you time, effort, and frustration. That’s where our design templates and setup guides come in handy. Whether you’re creating business cards, booklets, or large-format posters, our resources simplify the process, ensuring your files meet professional print standards.
In this guide, Pre-Press and Web Solutions Specialist, Caroline Murphy, talks us through how to use our print-ready templates to set up your artwork for success. Following these steps will help you avoid errors, streamline the production process, and achieve high-quality digital prints every time.
Why Use Our Design Templates for Digital Printing?
Digital printing requires precise file setup to ensure accuracy and quality. Using our custom templates reduces the risk of issues like cropping errors, colour inconsistencies, or poor resolution. Each template is tailored to the product specifications—from A6 Z-fold leaflets to A5 spiral-bound notebook, or DL flyers—they include everything you need to design with confidence.
With our guides, you’ll:
- Save time by following a clear structure
- Avoid common print set up mistakes
- Ensure your artwork meets the technical requirements for digital printing.
Step 1: Download the Right Template
Start by visiting the product page for your chosen print product. Each page includes a downloadable design guide and template specific to the size, format, and configuration of that product.
For example:
- A spiral-bound booklet template will include guidelines for bleeds, spine areas, and page alignment
- A business card template ensures perfect alignment for double-sided printing
- A roller banner template outlines safe zones and trim areas for large-format printing.
Pro Tip: Always double-check that the template matches your product’s dimensions and features.
Step 2: Open the Template in Design Software
We have created an Adobe InDesign template and a PDF template for you to use in programs like Canva or Affinity Designer, referencing the template for guidance.
What’s Included in the Template?
- 3mm Bleed Area – Extend your design into this space to avoid white edges after trimming
- Trim Line – This marks where the final cut will be made
- Safe Zone – Keep all critical text and elements within this area to prevent them from being cut off
- Additional Details – Some templates may include spine widths, perforation lines, or folding guides, depending on the product.
Pro Tip: Leave the template guidelines visible until your design is complete to avoid alignment errors.
Step 3: Create Your Artwork
Setting up artwork for professional printing involves more than just a great design—it requires precision. Follow these tips to ensure your files are ready for our state-of-the-art digital printers:
1. Image Resolution
Use high-resolution images (at least 300 DPI). Low-res graphics can appear pixelated when printed.
2. Colour Mode
Switch to CMYK colour mode, the standard for digital printing. RGB colors can appear differently in print, so converting to CMYK ensures accurate colour reproduction.
3. Bleed and Margins
Always extend backgrounds and design elements into the bleed area (3mm). This prevents visible white edges after trimming.
4. Layers and Guides
Keep template layers separate from your artwork. Before exporting, hide or delete guide layers to ensure they don’t appear in your final print.
Step 4: Save Your File in the Correct Format
To make sure your design prints perfectly, save your artwork in a PDF Print format. A handy checklist before saving includes:
- Include the bleed area in your file
- Check that your file is in CMYK color mode
- Save your file as a PDF.
Pro Tip: Double-check your file against the design guide before uploading it. This avoids delays in processing and ensures your print job moves forward smoothly.
Step 5: Upload and Order
Once your artwork is saved and ready, upload it to the product page. Our team will review your file for compatibility at the pre-press stage. If any adjustments are needed, we’ll guide you through the process to ensure your design is print-ready, and if not we’ll process your file for printing!
